Knee injuries are prevalent in sports, but a yearly clinic is hoping to reduce the risk in athletes.

Adventist Health Medical Group is offering its free fourth annual knee injury prevention seminar from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Sandy High School.

The clinic is open to individuals of all ages, but targets middle school and high school student athletes. Physical therapist Teri Vance will run the event with help from orthopedic surgeon Dr. John C. Anderson, family medicine and sports medicine certified Dr. Aaron Campbell and Mount Hood Athletic Club trainers.

“We will examine the stability of the knee in an effort to prevent injury,” Vance says.

Anderson will open the clinic with a presentation about knee injuries and what can be done to prevent them.

The participants then will move on to stations manned by physical therapists who will put the knees through several tests in order to check their strength and flexibility as well as several other areas.

Physicians will examine the knees, checking for instability, loose ligaments and other factors that could put the knee at risk of injury.

After the examination, participants will receive a score sheet informing them how they performed and in what areas they need to improve.

Trainers then will provide a series of exercises that target the knee’s determined weaknesses.

The clinic also will provide a copy of the findings to coaches of any student athletes who participate so they can better understand where athletes need to improve.

Vance started the seminar four years ago by working with just the Sandy girls basketball team. Females have the highest predisposition to injuries because of the knee’s configuration and shape.

Eventually the clinic began including males, who can experience rapid growth rates, which can also put the knee at risk.

“We want to make the public more aware of knee injuries and provide them with information to prevent injuries,” Vance says.
