The evening’s agenda includes an art exhibit that Becky Hawley calls “mind-boggling.” Hawley is president of the Wy’east Artisans Guild, which is presenting the “Not What It Seems” art exhibit in the lobby of the Sandy Actors Theater.

After the art show, the theater opens its door for all present to enjoy a full-length preview performance of “Leading Ladies,” the play that will raise its opening-weekend curtain Friday, Nov. 9.

As curator of the art show “Not What It Seems,” Hawley says art is often ambiguous — it’s meaning in the eye of the beholder.

“Art conveys many things to many people,” she said. “There is often more to art than meets the eye. The artwork in this show may not be what it seems, at first glance. It is designed to make the viewer think a bit.”

Artists will be present to explain their work and answer questions during a short presentation at 7 p.m.

As curator of each art exhibit that is on display in the theater’s lobby during each play of each season, Hawley creates a show that is loosely tied to the theme of each play.

Artists in the Wy’east Artisans Guild are from a number of cities in the Portland metro area, but they focus their community work in the Gresham, Boring, Sandy and mountain villages area.

Voluntary donations to the guild would be the only cost for the Nov. 8 evening’s entertainment. Those donations will benefit the guild’s community projects: Kids Outreach, providing arts and crafts for local youths; Solace In Silk, which provides free scarves for chemo-patients; and free art-related programs open to the community.

Theater doors open at 6:45. SAT is located behind Ace Hardware at 39181 Pioneer Blvd.

During theater hours the art exhibit in the lobby is open to view. For more information about Wy’east Artisans Guild, call Hawley at 503-668-5590.
