The Damascus Fresh and Local Market could use more vendors and volunteers

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO:DAMASCUS FRESH AND LOCAL MARKET - This was the scene last summer in Damascus when local residents came each Thursday to find the freshest local produce and other craft items at the Damascus Fresh and Local Market. The market is seeking more vendors before this years May 23 opening. What better way to keep family members healthy than to feed them local farm produce because it’s fresh and high in nutritive value?

For the second year, the Damascus Fresh and Local Market will be a popular outlet for local small farmers to sell the produce of their fields.

The market isn’t open yet but is gathering vendors for locally grown produce and craft items as well as appropriate entertainment and educational enterprises.

Vendors will gather at the market site in downtown Damascus every Thursday from 3-7 p.m. between May 23 and Sept. 26. The location is the same as in 2012, at 19850 Damascus Lane, off Foster Road north of the Safeway store.

The Committee for the Future of Damascus has organized a market that focuses on locally grown foods and unique local businesses along with some entertainment and educational activities.

This year the market will support new farm products vendors and have cooking and food preservation demonstrations, courtesy of the Oregon State University Extension Service and others.

In addition, there will be a booth featuring free craft activities for children and a central gathering place where people can talk with each other as they enjoy the freshly made delights offered in the food booths.

Each market day will have entertainment featuring musicians and other performing artists who live near Damascus.

There are still spaces for vendors to participate in this year’s Damascus Fresh and Local Market. Interested vendors are asked to visit and click on the “Vendor Information Link.”

The market also could use a helping hand from volunteers and entertainers.

Market sponsors this year are Gramor Development, Clackamas County Soil and Water Conservation District, Clackamas County Health, Housing and Human Services, New Seasons Market, the city of Damascus and many individuals
