Chamber, college educate business owners in workshops

Collaboration offers available basic business classes for little or no charge

Connecting with the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mt. Hood Community College Small Business Development Center is offering a series of free and low-cost classes in Sandy.

Chamber leaders are calling the series “Sandy Summer Biz Boot Camp.”

The practical classes will be taught by experts in their respective fields, including developing a website, hiring, insurance and marketing.

The convenience factor is enhanced by the fact the classes can be taken by webinar or in person at the chamber’s expanded classroom, 38963 Pioneer Blvd.

Another convenience factor is the idea that the boot camp doesn’t require people to take all classes.

Participants can choose the topics that would be of most value for their individual business and focus on the most important topics.

Here are the four boot camp workshops still available this summer in Sandy:

Hiring New Employees

This free class will help participants learn how to attract and hire skilled employees. They’ll also learn how to begin a relationship with a new employee and get examples of how to place proper postings of job openings and the correct paperwork for applications, job descriptions and hiring.

Added to this class is a full explanation of the difference between an employee and an independent contractor.

The class is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 20.

Business Insurance 101

This free class will help business owners avoid risking all of their assets just to open a business. The instructor will demonstrate how to properly protect and insure a new business.

The class will address basic questions regarding business personal property, commercial general liability, bonds and workers compensation insurance.

It will be taught from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 18.

Online Marketing and Social Media

Participants in this class will learn how to use social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and YouTube to promote their respective businesses.

Attracting new customers will be the ultimate goal for people taking this class, as they learn the key elements of successful social media marketing.

The class is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, and the fee is $35.

Business Website Essentials

This free class will teach in a step-by-step way the basics of creating a successful website for a small business.

The instructor will present tools to build a website as well as web hosting options to publish a website on the Internet, basically from scratch.

The class is designed for people of any skill set, and will include some options for people who have budget concerns

The class will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15.
