A national effort is in place to gain a total of 3,300 miles walked in one day: Thursday

If it seems like a lot more people are out walking Thursday, that assumption is correct.

Thursday is a special day, declared National Discover Your Optimal Health Day by Wayne Scott Andersen, M.D., who is leading a national movement among healthy people to coach and teach others how to discover and maintain their optimal health.

In Sandy, the movement is being led by Jane Anderson and Shelley Anderson, both of Sandy but not related. They are Take Shape For Life health coaches and are part of Dr. Andersen’s movement to eliminate obesity in the United States.

Dr. Andersen is a board-certified critical care physician, bestselling author and the leader of the movement to end the obesity epidemic with strategies to create health.

He is the author of the bestseller "Dr. A’s Habits of Health," "Living a Longer, Healthier Life" and "Discover Your Optimal Health" (a New York Times bestseller).

He also is cofounder of Take Shape for Life and medical director for Medifast, a program of meal replacements that is recommended with the Take Shape For Life program.

Thursday is set aside for some people to make a statement that it is better to be in optimal health. That statement will be seen in the form of what is being called a “Walk Across America.”

Well, it’s not literally a walk across this great land, but if the mileage walked by participants across the country equals 3,300 miles, it will be as many miles as the country is wide.

The Andersons are simply asking Sandy area residents to walk at least a mile and then contact them to get their walk distance added into the total for the day.

Similar walks are planned across the country, from Washington to Florida and from Maine to California.

The walk is the first event of its kind in the United States, Jane Anderson said, and is inspired by Dr. Andersen’s book on achieving optimal health.

Mayor Bill King and Council President Jeremy Pietzold signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 12 as Discover Your Optimal Health Day in Sandy.

With this activity, Anderson said she hopes to promote the importance of health awareness in Sandy.

“The goal is to encourage a lifestyle of healthy eating habits and regular physical activity at an early age,” she said.

Participants should check in at AntFarm, 39140 Proctor Blvd., by 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

This first event has been created in recognition of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Anderson said.
