School district announces next Kelso Elementary School principal
Katherine Schweitzer will succeed Pat Sanders
The Oregon Trail School District announced the next Kelso Elementary School Principal Thursday.
Katherine Schweitzer will succeed Pat Sanders, retiring Kelso Elementary School principal, July 1.
"I believe Katie will be an inspiring instructional leader, a strong student and family advocate, and overall, a good fit for the Kelso community," Aaron Bayer, superintendent, said in a press release.
'Kelso School has flourished under Pat Sanders, and I believe Katie will bring a continued passion for student success," Bayer said. "I look forward to working with her.'
Schweitzer is a vice principal at Sam Barlow High School and began her career in education in 2000 as a bilingual elementary teacher. She earned a doctorate in education from George Fox University in 2009.
Selected from more than 20 candidates, Schweitzer said she looked forward to working at the elementary level again, calling it 'a crucial period to instill a love of learning in students, to build their ethical foundation, and teach them how to interact positively with the world around them.'
'I know several families from the Kelso area, including some parents who also teach in Gresham-Barlow, and they have glowing reviews of Kelso School,' Schweitzer said in a press release.
The community is invited to meet Schweitzer at an informal drop-in event at 5 p.m. Monday, March 12 in the Kelso library. A school board meeting will follow at 6 p.m.
