Kids invited to hunt for golden eggs

Meinig Park will host two events

The city of Sandy and the Kiwanis Club of Sandy once again are celebrating Easter with egg hunts galore.

At 8:30 p.m., Friday, April 18, at Meinig Memorial Park, 17998 Meinig Ave., kids in grades six through 12 are invited to hunt for Easter eggs in the dark.

Carol Cohen, events coordinator for the city, has been putting together the event for about 10 years and says there is usually a big turnout.

Those wishing to participate should meet under the gazebo at Meinig Park equipped with a bag to collect their eggs and a flashlight.

Hidden among the many candy-filled eggs, five golden eggs will hold gift certificates to local businesses.

The following morning, Saturday, April 19, after the teens have cleared the park, the Sandy Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt.

“I remember in the old days when we hard-boiled huge quantities of eggs and colored them in big batches,” said Sandy Kiwanis President Nancy Hoffman. “Today we have modernized and bowed to what kids really want: candy and stuffed bunnies.”

The first hunt begins at 10 a.m., for children 2 and younger. Hunts for ages 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10 will come after that. Event coordinator Kimberley Nelson said that after everyone’s done, they’ll give the youngest kids another go at it since they’re still learning.

Kids should bring their own basket and be accompanied by an adult to hunt for their eggs and candy.

Once again, the goal will be to find the golden egg. Golden eggs can be traded in for stuffed bunnies. Every year, 100 bunnies are purchased to give away.

Sandy Kiwanis asks for sponsors to purchase bunnies, and in return, a business card will be attached to the bunnies’ ears along with a note asking families to thank the business for the donation by patronizing the business.by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - Kids also can get their photo taken with the Easter bunny at the event.

Bunny sponsorships must be received by Wednesday, April 16. Call Nelson at 503-819-0511 for sponsorship pick-ups or send them to the Kiwanis Club of Sandy at P.O. Box 1261, Sandy.

Books and skate passes from Skate World in Gresham also will be given away at the event.
