Drama students place at state

SHS drama excels in two categories at State Competition

At the Oregon Thespians State Showcase Competition, Sandy High School drama students led the pack in two categories: small group musical theater and one-act plays.

The three-day competition was held in Salem at the beginning of April and on Thursday, April 3, six Sandy boys won the state competition in small group musical for their number from the musical “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

Students Sam Helzer, Anthony Ulibarri, Riley McCord, JJ Dominguez, Ruben Garza and Sam Oxley performed the piece.

Throughout the competition, 36 one-act plays were presented from schools across Oregon. The highest rating from the judges is Superior — only 10 one-acts were awarded that rating, and Sandy’s “Home for the Chalidays” was one of them.

The one-act was directed by senior Sam Helzer and performed by Riley McCord, Karlie Kitchens, Connor Persell and Dana Logan.
