Gathering of the Guilds is May 2-4

Sandy resident and traditional Zapotecan rug weaver Francisco Bautista will show and sell his work at the Portland Handweavers Guild Sale May 2-4 as part of the Gathering of the Guilds.

Bautista, his wife, Laura, and their two children come from a three-generation family of Zapotecan weavers from Teotitlan del Valle near Oaxaca, Mexico.

At age 12, Bautista weaved his first rug, following in his parents’ footsteps.

Bautista’s rugs are woven from sheep’s wool on a foot pedal loom. To color the rugs, Bautista uses naturally sourced dyes from native plants in the area, which are known for retaining color for a long time.

This year, Bautista and his wife became members of the Portland Handweavers Guild.

The guild has been in existence for more than 60 years. It provides its members with educational opportunities through lectures, workshops, scholarships, study groups and venues to sell and exhibit their work.

The guild’s annual sale, “Handwovens Plus,” will take place at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Portland. It will showcase more than 40 regional textile artists.

“This is a once a year opportunity to browse and purchase unique, handmade fiber art ranging from wearable art to useful table linens to decorative basketry,” said Margaret Zeps, also a member of the guild.

“Handwovens Plus” will feature daily demonstrations of weaving, spinning and basketry as well as hands-on activities for children.

The Gathering of the Guilds also will feature sales of the Oregon Potters Association Ceramics Showcase, the Creative Metal Arts Guild, the Oregon Glass Guild, the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers and the Portland Bead Society.

The sale is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, May 2, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 4. Admission is free.
