Planet Cup of Joe expands to serve coffee in Sandy

Estacada business brings quick caffeine option to Sandy

Sandy has a new option for drive-through coffee on the west end of town.

Sandy’s Planet Cup of Joe owner Leanne Van Winkle said her business is about more than just coffee, it’s about the experience.

“We care about every person that comes through there,” Van Winkle said.

Located just off the highway as you enter Sandy from Boring, her business offers a way to quickly caffeinate while visiting with friendly baristas.

Some of Planet Cup of Joe’s customers are elderly and don’t necessarily have someone to consistently talk to in their everyday lives, Van Winkle said. Providing every customer with a smile and a kind word can really make the difference.

“It’s an experience all the way around,” she said. “That means a lot to us.”

Sandy’s Planet Cup of Joe opened in April after Van Winkle decided to expand her business. She has been the owner of the Planet Cup of Joe in Estacada for 10 years.

After having worked there for about one year, Van Winkle had the opportunity to take over the business when she was just 19.

“I just fell in love with coffee and customer service,” she said. “I love the connection you get with the customers. In a way, they become part of your life. It didn’t feel like work.”

Van Winkle’s business employs five people in Estacada and three in Sandy.

Van Winkle said she’s always wanted to open a shop in Sandy. She was hoping to expand her business, but didn’t want to get away from the small town feel. She said she felt Sandy was the perfect place.

While working in Estacada, Van Winkle noticed they were getting a lot of customers from Sandy who were visiting family or passing through.

She said the response they have gotten has been warm and excited.

Families hoping for early morning coffee or cool afternoon treats can come to Van Winkle’s business without the hassle of unloading kids just to get good coffee. Planet Cup of Joe offers a family friendly menu and plenty of options for thirsty kids.

Van Winkle said the most popular drink is the UFO, a blended Oreo drink that can be made with or without espresso. The drink has held the title of bestseller for 10 years.

If it’s more of a traditional coffee drink you’re looking for, Van Winkle said Planet Cup of Joe’s white chocolate drinks are a close second.

Planet Cup of Joe serves K&F Roasters, a coffee company based in Portland.
