Mt. Hood Athletic Club is declaring war for the sake of the kids.
In an effort to raise scholarship funds for children interested in participating in the club's Elite Basketball Program, the team will host a Nerf Wars event at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at 37095 Highway 26, Sandy.
The event, featuring foam-based Nerf toys, is open to all ages and non-members, and teams are encouraged to get creative with themes and costumes. There will be contests for best costume among teens and adults.
"We had a lot of kids (for whom) this was a financial strain," Membership and Marketing Director Sandra Sites said.
The cost of participation for children is $500 per season, and for only $5 to $50, families can help those children afford their chance to play.
There will be a Children's Nerf Academy for those 8 and younger to practice target shooting.
Admission is $8. Individual competitors older than 9 are also welcome to register for $12, and teams of four will have three different tournaments to choose from for $50.
Nerf blasters are available for rental, and a limited amount of bullets will be handed out with entry. Additional bullets will be available for purchase. Modified blasters are prohibited. Eyewear is recommended, but not provided.
"It should be a fun day," Sites added. "There's a lot of kids who should get to play and can't afford it."
