Fugitive cuffed, jailed, guns taken

Man behind bars on $1 million bail

STEPHEN M.PUCKETT
accused of felony sex abuseA man wanted by law enforcement officers for sexual offenses in Wasco County is being considered such a threat to society that he has had $1 million bail placed on his arrest warrant.

Thanks to the clear thinking of a Sandy police officer on routine patrol in the early morning hours on a recent Sunday, the man accused of four felony counts of first-degree sex abuse is behind bars.

Steven Michael Puckett, 48, Portland, was arrested at 1:20 a.m. Sunday, May 12, in a business parking lot near Highway 26 and Kate Schmitz Avenue.

It was the officer’s intuition and training that gave him a bad feeling about the white Dodge Durango. That feeling, however, could be attributed to the strange way the Durango was parked.

The officer checked the license plate number with police dispatch and was told the owner of the vehicle had multiple felony warrants from Wasco County.

The man wanted on those charges also had two loaded guns in the vehicle, the officer found out after he had placed double-locked handcuffs on Puckett.

The officer didn’t want to leave the vehicle in a parking lot or a tow yard with loaded guns, so the weapons were seized and placed in the police property room for safe keeping.

The suspect’s Multnomah County permit to carry a concealed weapon also was seized, since the officer didn’t believe a person in custody for felonies would be allowed to keep a concealed handgun license.

The officer transported Puckett to the Clackamas County Jail, where he was booked on four felony warrants from Wasco County for first-degree sex abuse.
