1992: Teacher and youths build Oregon Trail hut old-fashioned way

1952 — Residents of Loop Highway protested a proposed dump site 60 years ago. The county had planned to own and operate the dump two miles east of Sandy, and a public hearing was planned for Aug. 12 to determine the feasibility of the location. “The dump was proposed because of health and sanitary conditions in Sandy,” Judge Wallace Telford said.

1962 — Eleanor Roosevelt was scheduled to visit Timberline Lodge 50 years ago, on the 25th anniversary of its dedication by her husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Construction had begun on the new chair lift at the lodge, said Darrell Jones, a county commissioner. The new lift was constructed with federal money from defunct railroad land grants and obtained for recreation improvement in Clackamas County. Jones said every effort would be made to complete the lift for the coming ski season; however, it was doubtful it would beat the winter weather.

1972 — The Sandy Post was selling school supplies — yes, school supplies — 40 years ago. Notebook paper was 69 cents for the 300 count package and 99 cents for the 500 count. In other news, 75 people came out for a meeting to discuss tansy ragwort. A Clackamas County extension agent and specialist said the livestock business in the county would be destroyed in 10 years if something were not done about the invasive weed. A specialist from Oregon State University, however, countered that the weed was not really such a serious threat. Gov. Tom McCall had created a task force to work on the tansy problem throughout the state.

1982 — Voters rejected a levy request by Sandy Union High School District for the second time 30 years ago. The operating levy was for $2.7 million, but voters said no by a 1,328-1,061 count. Assistant Principal Dennis Crow asked that the public attend the next meeting of the board on Aug. 16 to tell board members what they could support.

1992 — Youths were building an Oregon Trail hut the old-fashioned way 20 years ago, as Sandy High metals teacher Lynn Sondenaa oversaw the Government Camp project. The Oregon Trail hut was a building reminiscent of Timberline Lodge in Cascadian style. Already, the site was becoming a focal point of the community, with one Government Camp resident visiting every day, and tourists stopping to hear about the building from Sondenaa.

2002 — The coffee was still steaming 10 years ago. Long before corporate Starbucks dreamed of locating east of Portland, Terri Ferguson and Kari Phetteplace had opened Mountain Moka espresso stand outside Sandy Sentry. Transformed into a full-service coffee shop over the course of 10 years, the business took on new owners, Tina Hovey and Rosemary Giusto. In other news, Sandy Skate Park was to host the 2002 Skatefest Aug. 10. The day would feature music, a raffle and competitions. Skatefest supported Sandy Skate Park and was sponsored by East Area Special Events for Youth and Families.
