Among the 1,050 teams of 12 runners to race in the 31st annual Hood to Coast — the largest relay in the world — was the Helifino team includes seven Sandy area residents and five others.

Led by captain Tiah Petrucci of Sandy, a second-year racer, the team placed 118th in the mixed open and 490th out of all the teams.

“This year was 200 times better than last year,” Petrucci said. “There were no hiccups and everyone got along. We had an amazing team.”

Hood to Coast, which starts at Timberline Lodge and ends in Seaside, spanning 199 miles, began in 1982 with eight teams and has filled the team cap on the opening day of registration for the past 14 years.
