Exhibit offers art with soul

A 'spirited' art exhibit will fill the lobby at Sandy Actors Theatre Sept 14-Oct. 7

The generic spiritual realm is the overarching theme of the coming production at the Sandy Actors Theatre, and it also is the theme of a complementary art exhibit entitled “Art With Soul.”

That exhibit will remain in the lobby of the theater for the duration of the play, Sept. 14-Oct. 7.

Visitors to opening night of the art display also will be treated to a free full-length preview performance of “Blithe Spirit.”

The story, penned by Noel Coward, enhances a person’s ability to laugh at the mishaps and mayhem that result when a man is “haunted” by the spirit of his first wife.

The art exhibit is described by its organizer, Becky Hawley, as “a spirited collection of artwork.”

Hawley is president of the Wy’east Artisans Guild, the source of local artists for the exhibit, and she says the exhibit matches the theme of SAT’s stage production, although it is very general.

“’Blithe Spirit’ is about a guy whose wife is deceased,” Hawley said, “and they have a séance with a crystal ball. So we decided we’d do something with spirits.”

Artists will be on hand to describe their art and answer questions.

The show’s guest artist, Vishal Velma, hails from New Delhi, India, but he won’t be attending the show.

Velma is a photographer with a global imagination, and his visualization can be seen in the photo illustration he is sharing with exhibit visitors.

Other examples of the exhibit’s variety include acrylic or oil paintings on canvas as well as copper work and felted-wool art pieces.

Hawley, who lives in Sandy, is SAT’s artist in residence and is responsible for art that appears in its productions. In “Blithe Spirit,” be sure to look for her large painting of a grand staircase.

There is no admission charge for the art exhibit or the preview of “Blithe Spirit,” which begins at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the theater, 17433 Meinig Ave., behind Ace Hardware. All donations will benefit community programs supported by members of Wy’east Artisans Guild.

“Art With Soul” will be on display in the lobby of the theater through the run of the play, Sept. 14 through Oct. 7.
