The Hood family takes home Sandy Oktoberfest treasure of $200

A treasure hunt for the Sandy Oktoberfest beer stein was the Hood family’s kind of competition.

“It’s fun as a contest because it forces you to go outside,” Charla, the mother, says. “We frequent a lot of the parks.”

The family from Boring is made up of outdoor enthusiasts who love hiking, backpacking and biking.

After following two week’s worth of clues in The Sandy Post, the Hoods knew the stein had to be hidden somewhere in the main part of Sandy, and most likely in a park.

From participating in a small play on a Meinig Park stage, the family knew the park was brimming with good hiding spots and numerous benches.

Kaleb, 17, crawled under the little bridge and snagged the coveted ceramic mug.

Kaleb, his sister Malaina, 13, girlfriend Samantha Mitchell, 17, and Charla were so excited, they threw up their arms and cheered, much to the curiosity of teenagers congregated by the gazebo.

“We came home, got (my husband) Brian and made him relive the whole thing,” Charla says. “It’s so neat this was a family-friendly contest.”

The Hood family moved to the Boring area 17 years ago, when Kaleb was a baby. Brian is an industrial painter, and Charla is a teacher’s aide at Mayer Christian School in Gresham.

Kaleb and Malaina enjoy hanging out at parks, playing games and visiting the beach and mountain.

The family expects to divvy the $200 prize awarded Sunday among the kids for their college savings and some sort of fun activity.

“I love family memories like these,” Charla says. “We try to attend (events like Oktoberfest) every year. All these little community things are what makes it fun to be here.”
