Juanita Belle Goins McManigle

June 22, 1916-Sept. 27, 2012

Former Sandy resident Juanita Belle Goins McManigle died Thursday, Sept. 27. She was 96.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham.

Juanita was born June 22, 1916, in Blitzen, Ore., to Roy Marvin and Daisy Tabor Wells. She grew up in Bishop, Calif., and graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1934.

Juanita married Elmer James McManigle on April 8, 1982, in Vancouver, Wash. She lived in Sandy for many years and worked at McCoy’s Nursery and Oregon Bulb Farm.

An accomplished oil and china painter, Juanita also enjoyed gardening, reading and crocheting. She was past president of the Oregon Society of China Painters.

Juanita is survived by her sons, Ralph Goins of Sandy and Roy Goins of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Judy Dovre of Oregon City; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

James “Lec” Hodge

Nov. 2, 1944-Sept. 28, 2012

Sandy resident James “Lec” Hodge died at his home Friday, Sept. 28. He was 67.

A memorial and potluck gathering will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 20, at Eagle Fern Park, 27505 S.E. Eagle Fern Road, Eagle Creek.

Lec was born Nov. 2, 1944, in Sandy to Alfa Ray and Bertha (Proctor) Hodge. He grew up and attended school in the Sandy area.

Lec worked in the lumber mill industry for many years. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and an occasional poker game. He was an avid watcher of wrestling, football and old western movies.

On Sept. 20, 1999, Lec married Ruby Higgins in Oregon City. They made their home in Sandy.

He was preceded in death by his wife’s son.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Lori Stankewitsch of Portland and Gloria Hoskins of Yakima, Wash.; sons, Tim Hodge, Alan Perkins and Larry Fraly, all of Sandy; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Mary “Phyllis” Calhoon

Oct. 11, 1914-Oct. 6, 2012

Sandy resident Mary “Phyllis” Calhoon died Saturday, Oct. 6. She was 97.

A private service will be held in San Diego.

She was born Mary Phyllis Christensen on Oct. 11, 1914, in Gresham to Frank and Grace (Wolf) Christensen.

When Phyllis was a young child, her family moved to Sandy, where they made their permanent home and Phyllis attended school.

After graduating from Sandy High School in 1933, she attended San Diego State University, where she met her future husband.

In 1936, Phyllis married Leo Calhoon. They made their home in San Diego, and Phyllis began her career in the banking industry.

They later moved to Oregon and made their home in Sandy on Music Camp Road. Phyllis pursued her career with Clackamas County Bank.  

In 1954, they returned to San Diego until retiring. From 1968 until 1976, Phyllis cared for her mother until she died.

After her husband’s death in 1996, Phyllis returned to Oregon, living in Gresham and later returning to Sandy. For the last 11 years, Phyllis lived at Avamere in Sandy.

Every day, she would go from room to room at Avamere, where she checked up on the residents. Phyllis was a devout Christian and a member of the Nazarene Church. She enjoyed cooking and was dedicated to her family.

Survivors include five nephews and four nieces.  

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Hood Hospice, 39641 Scenic St., Sandy, 97055.
