by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - At 7 p.m. during the Wine in the Woods event, Cello innovator Gideon Freudmann will lead a trio he calls Caravan Gogh that also includes the guitar of Brad Price and the upright bass of Calen Uhlig. Be prepared for blues, jazz, folk, classical, rock and more. The Sandy Summer Sounds series of concerts will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Theater in the Woods stage in the southeast area of Meinig Memorial Park.

Come early, event organizers suggest. Dinner and dessert along with a variety of wines will be available for purchase from the gazebo.

Participating wineries include Lujon, Christopher Bridge, Naked Winery and Buddha Kat. Dita’s Chocolates also will sell wine and chocolate.

Wine can be purchased by the sample, glass or bottle. Or a wine glass with the festival logo can be had for $10, which includes a choice of one glass of wine. For those who prefer beer, the Beer Den will be on site.

Busy Bee Catering will provide food, including grilled salmon on salad, grilled burger with Walla Walla sweets and vegetarian wraps. Appetizers and desserts are also available.

But at Wine in the Woods, not only is the beverage in the spotlight, music also is an important part of the festivities.

Rose City Hot Club will get the party started at 5 p.m. The group performs live acoustic swing music in the tradition and style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Gypsy jazz, a dynamic style of jazz popular in France in the ’30s and ’40s, is still enjoyed throughout the world.

This group not only brings a great deal of talent to the stage, but its members have so much fun playing together that the audience can’t help but get caught up in it.

Caravan Gogh, a trio that includes Sandy favorite Gideon Freudmann on electric cello, Brad Price on guitar and Calen Uhlig on upright bass, will begin its set at 7 p.m. Freudmann is a cello innovator, composer, songwriter and improviser who has amazed Sandy audiences at several previous shows. He plays blues, jazz, folk, classical, rock and more.

Gideon’s original music has been used for theater, dance and film, and he also performs live soundtrack for silent films. His music is often heard on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” “Car Talk,” “This American Life,” “Dr. Demento” and “Good Morning America.”

The Wine in the Woods event is free and family friendly, and prices for food and beverages are reasonable.
