'Wild' set to film in Troutdale

by: PHOTO COPYRIGHT 2013: REESE WITHERSPOON - Reese Witherspoon plays Cheryl Strayed in the film Wild, based off Strayeds popular memoir. If “Portlandia” wasn’t exciting enough, Mayor Doug Daoust said the set of “Wild” starring Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon is filming in Troutdale Friday afternoon, Oct. 25.

Daoust said film crews are renting City Councilor Glenn White’s property along the East Historic Columbia River Highway to park their equipment as they intend to shoot across the street at Glenn Otto Community Park.

In lieu of the tradition of giving Witherspoon the keys to the city, glass-jewelry designers of Marco Polo Designs in downtown Troutdale and the mayor decided to do something a bit more original.

Claude Cruz, lead designer at the Italian-influenced design studio he owns with his wife, Penny, are hand selecting a glass necklace and earring set they hope to present the actress along with the mayor and White.

“This is a special area, and we want to send her away with something representative of that,” Cruz said.

With Witherspoon and the set of “Wild” coming to town, Cruz said, “It would be a very good opportunity for our city to get some visibility, as well as the local artist community and Marco Polo Designs.”

The screenplay of “Wild” is an adaptation by Nick Hornby (“An Eduction,” “High Fidelity”) of Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.”

Witherspoon is set to star as Strayed, who lives in Portland.

A Fox Searchlight Pictures press release gives the scoop: With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone.

Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, “Wild” is said to capture the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens and ultimately heals her.

The film is produced by Witherspoon, Bruna Papandrea (“Warm Bodies,” “All Good Things”) and Bill Pohlad (“The Tree of Life,” “12 Years a Slave”).

Shooting on location in California and Oregon, “Wild” will also film in Ashland and Bend.

Earlier this month, Portland-based media outlets announced “Wild” film crews were looking for tattooed, pierced and dreadlocked extras, about 200 of them.
