Sandy girls pick up first league win

Raquel Pellecer has a big night in the Pioneers win over St. Helens

The Sandy girls basketball team picked up their first win since before Christmas break, ending a 10-game skid by going on the road and beating St. Helens 54-46 on Friday night.

The Pioneers raced in front with an eight-point spurt at the end of the first period to take an early 16-8 lead. Sandy kept the run going with another 10 point spurt in the second quarter to stretch the margin to a commanding 26-10.

St. Helens knocked down a pair of 3s late in the half to get back within striking distance, and Sandy sputtered to the finish with just four baskets in the second half. But the Pioneers sealed the win at the free-throw line where they connected on 14 of 21 (.667) attempts to maintain a sizeable cushion on the Lions.

Raquel Pellecer led Sandy with 21 points, while Kaylee Barnett scored 12.

St. Helens twice closed to within seven in the closing minutes on 3s from Jillian Ross and Michelle Sass, but Sandy hit 5 of 6 (.833) free throws in the last minute to the win.

Sandy opened the week with a 40-32 loss against Liberty.
