Harris gets start in Bruins win

Sandy High graduate Connor Harris, a junior at George Fox, went 4 2/3 innings giving up six hits and striking out six during the Bruins 11-3 win over Whitworth on Friday. George Fox held a 4-2 lead when Harris left the mound in the middle of the game before breaking it open with a seven-run spurt in the fifth inning.

Harris is 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA through seven starts this season.

College hosts triathlon training

Mt. Hood Community College hosts a triathlon Monday, May 27. The event calls for a half-mile swim at in the outdoor pool, a 13.3-mile bike course and finishes with a 5K road run on campus trails. The event is open to athletes ages 15-and-older with online registration available at series33triathlon.com.

Mt. Hood CC offers a spring term class (PE185TRI) in beginning triathlon to help students prepare for the challenge.

Three-way battle for bracket title

The Outlook/Sandy Post basketball bracket contest is a three-person race heading into this weekend’s Final Four with Gresham High teacher Alan Simpson continuing to hold down the No. 1 spot with 282 points. He picked a perfect Midwest Region (15-0), which saw Louisville emerge as the only top seed to reach Atlanta.

Also remaining in contention is Shawn Bonner despite seeing his championship pick New Mexico fall out in its opening game. He can pick up winning points if Syracuse advances to the title game. Sandy’s Dan Poala is the other contender, leading the pack of entrants who selected Louisville as their champion.

Last year’s winner Joan Sears found her way into the top-10 this week, while no one among the lead pack picked No. 9 Wichita State to reach even the Sweet 16.

Collmer wins 800-meter race

Barlow High graduate Christa Collmer, a sophomore at Mt. Hood CC, won the 800-meter dash at the Lewis & Clark Invitational last Saturday, covering the two laps in 2:19.81. She also finished fourth in the 1,500 and ran the anchor leg on the Saints runner-up 1,600 relay. McKenzie Warren out of Sandy High was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put and hammer throw, while Charlene Manning was third in the high hurdles and tied for fourth in the high jump.

Zecheriah McLaurin, a Centennial High graduate, won the long jump with a leap of 22-feet-8-inches and finished fifth in the 100. Chris Un won the triple jump at 44-4 1/4, while Tyler Callahan won the javelin by 30 feet with a throw of 209-4. Cody Quinton finished fourth in the discus.

Fighting Fillies open against Tacoma

The Portland Fighting Fillies of the Women’s Football Association open the 2013 season at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 6, against the Tacoma Trauma. The Fillies play their home games at Milwaukie High. The Fillies are under the direction of new head coach Asia Wisecarver, a Linfield graduate, who was an assistant with the team last season.
