Girls land three blue ribbons in field events

Sandy finishes fifth in the team scoring with 77 points

by: SANDY POST: DAVID BALL - Sandys Dalen Richardson paces the way early in the bell lap during her third-place finish in the 1,500-meter final Friday.MILWAUKIE — The Sandy girls track team picked up three wins at last week’s Northwest Oregon district meet on its way to a fifth-place team finish.

Each of the Pioneers victories came in the field events with Rachel McKinnis winning the shot put (38-feet-8-inches) by more than two feet, while Kaitlyn Klahn won a much closer battle in the triple jump (35-6 3/4), holding off Kylie Reinholdt of St. Helens by the length of a thumb.

Sandy’s other win came in the high jump where sophomore Rebekah Mather cleared 4-10 to share the victory with Reinholdt of St. Helens and Elizabeth Pecsok of Liberty.

The Pioneers also put together 14 points in the pole vault where Klahn and Paola Phipps combined for a 2-3 finish.

Dalen Richardson powered Sandy on the track, highlighted by a third-place effort in the 1,500 final. She sat fourth after the first lap, settling in just behind the leaders snug against the inside of lane one.

Richardson eventually moved through the pack and found herself leading the charge heading into the bell lap. She would hold that position into the backstretch before Wilsonville’s Taryn Rawlings sprinted away for the win in 4:49.04. Richardson finished in 4:45.05.

Richardson added a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.

Teammate Zayna Salveter found a spot on the awards stand in the 200 (fifth) and 400 (sixth). Both Salveter and Richardson joined Madison Kansala and Morgan Greenlee for a third-place effort in the 1,600 relay.

Sandy finished the meet with 77 team points, while Sherwood won the girls title with a 148.5 total.
