The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association held its annual State-Metro All-Star basketball series on Friday and Saturday, and the Sandy Pioneers were well-represented. Former Sandy stars Jacob Groom and Justin Adams were invited to play for the Metro all-Stars and Sandy coach Jason Maki was asked to be one of the teams coaches.
The series featured the best 5A and 6A players from around the state going head-to-head in a pair of weekend games.
It was an honor for all of us to be chosen to be a part of this series. Justin and Jacob earned the right to be chosen because of their excellence this season, Maki said. And to be honest, I was chosen because of their excellence too.
In Fridays game at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Adams scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Groom added five points for the Metro All-Stars. The State All-Stars downed the Metro stars, 109-93.
The Metro squad bounced back with a 111-104 victory at Wilsonville High School on Saturday. Adams recorded four points and eight boards while Groom pitched in three points and three rebounds.
It was a great experience to be around so many quality players and coaches, Maki said. As a coach, it was very fun to see my guys side-by-side with kids from Lake Oswego, Central Catholic, Southridge and Westview. These were the best players in Oregon and Sandy had two guys playing.
Maki said the series was an appropriate send-off for two players who started every game for Sandy for three consecutive seasons.
It was gratifying to see Sandy represented by two fine young men. They both competed hard and represented our team, and our community, with class, Maki said. For me personally, it gave me one more chance to be with Jacob and Justin. Im going to miss those guys.
