Thatcher goes three sets to claim tennis trophy
The girls tennis program at Sandy High hosted the Mountain Festival Womens Singles Tennis Tournament over the weekend, and coach Greg Thorson could not have been happier with the way it turned out. The tournament was open to all women and girls living within Oregon Trail District boundaries, and 24 entrants participated across four divisions.
In the 12-and-under age bracket, Kaytlin Poulin took the title by defeating Madison Krenning, 6-1, 6-3, in the finals.
Multi-sport athlete McKenna Wells used her agility and athleticism to outlast McKennah Joy in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) in the 14-and-under championship match.
The most competitive final came in the 17-and-under division and featured two members of the Sandy High School squad. Emmy Thatcher knocked off teammate Lindsey Shields, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-4, to earn the trophy.
Eva Lesto captured the open-division crown by cruising to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Chicako Hokanson in the final.
Sandy will play host to three more tournaments before the summer is out. The next one on the docket is a mixed doubles tournament and is slated for August 4.
