Timbers beat top seed, fall in finals

The Portland Timbers U23s scored a 4-3 shootout victory over No. 1 seed Fresno in the Premier Development League Western Conference semifinals Saturday. Defender Evyn Hewitt notched the equalizer in the 80th minute to send the match into overtime and eventually the penalty kick shootout. The Timbers converted their first four chances and held the lead throughout the tiebreaker, closing out the victory when Fresno missed the mark on its last penalty kick.

The Timbers saw their season end Sunday with a 1-0 loss to the Victoria Highlanders in the West final. Brett Levis scored the game’s only goal in the 16th minute. The U23s had a chance to tie in the 82nd minute, but Anthony Machionne’s shot went high over the crossbar.

The U23 squad opened the playoffs with a 2-1 win over Vancouver last week. The teams finished two hours of play locked in a 1-1 draw before Portland went perfect in the shootout to win 5-4 on penalty kicks. The teams converted each of their four chances before Vancouver sailed a shot high, opening the door for Portland goalie David Meves to bury a shot into the net for the winner. Portland was 5-for-5 on the penalty kicks with Zach Barnes, Reed McKenna, Eric Miller and Jose Ribas also finding the net in the tiebreaker.

Portland struck first on a header by Clark Phillips in the 68th minute only to see Vancouver pull even with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. The Timbers put four shots on goal during the 30-minute overtime, but none found their way over the goal line.
