Newspaper hosts Fantasy Football League


The Pamplin Media Group’s eastside sports department is looking for players to join a “play for fun” fantasy football league this fall. Test your skills against eastside reporters Parker Lee and David Ball. We have 20 open spots for team owners and will be running the online league through nfl.com with a live draft set for late August.

Athletic clearance begins this week

Athletic clearance for high school competitors begins 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 12-16, at the Sandy High athletic office. In addition to clearance forms, high school athletes are required to pass a physical every two years. Forms are available online at oregontrailschools.com.

Volleyball team hosts youth camp

The Sandy High volleyball program hosts a youth camp for grades 6-8 with sessions from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 19-21. Cost is $40.

Tennis team hosts doubles tourney

The Sandy High girls tennis program is hosting an open women’s doubles tournament Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 22-24, on the high school courts. The tourney is open to women within the Oregon Trail Schools district with an entry fee of $12 per player.

Registration is due by Monday, Aug. 19, by calling Greg Thorson at 503-661-8526.

Resort hosts Art Skipper golf tourney

The Resort at the Mountain hosts the Art Skipper Jr. Memorial golf tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. Entry is $100 per golf or $400 for a foursome. The entry includes a cart and admission to the awards barbecue. Tickets for the awards dinner only are also available for $35. Prizes will be awarded for skills competitions such as long drive, closest to the pin and putting.

Proceeds from the event benefit the No Pioneer Left Behind program. The entry deadline is Sept. 1. For more information, call the Sandy High athletic office at 503-668-8011, ext. 7114.

Saints land four on all-star team

The Mt. Hood CC baseball team landed four players on the Northwest Community College all-star roster for the World Baseball Challenge to be held Aug. 13-23 in Prince George, British Columbia.

Leading the way is outfielder Ryan Degner, who has signed to play at Oregon State next spring. He hit .350 with six home runs and 37 RBIs during his sophomore season.

Other Saints on the roster include catcher Mychal Harrington along with pitchers Eric Huson and Christian Bannister. Huson, who will play at Western Oregon, led the Saints with a 7-1 record and a 2.14 ERA.

Evans goes the distance in 3-2 loss

The Portland Timbers Reserves dropped a 3-2 decision to Vancouver on Sunday when the Whitecaps converted a penalty kick with less than five minutes to play.

Portland took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jose Valencia early in the second half, but the advantage lasted only a minute before Vancouver struck with an equalizer. The Timbers knotted the score 2-2 on a goal by defender Rauwshan McKenzie in the 81st minute.

Steven Evans out of Troutdale played a full 90 minutes in the midfield for the Timbers.
