The Sandy boys and girls squads each use several Milwaukie forfeits to cruise to big wins over the Mustangs

by: SANDY POST: PARKER LEE - Sandys John Behan takes a swing at a forehand shot during a match last week. He claimed the first set in a lopsided tiebreaker. The Sandy boys' tennis team closed out a jam-packed week of action with a solid 8-1 victory over Milwaukie on Friday. The Mustangs forfeitted several matches to make it easy on Sandy, but the few Pioneers who did get onto the court gave commendable efforts.

In the No. 1 singles match, Sandy's Tucker Idler went up against undefeated Jacob Cates who will be the top seed in the district tournament. Idler fell 6-2, 6-4, though the match was closer than the score indicated. Three of the games Idler lost in the first set went to deuce, so he was just a few shots away from being in position to steal the set. He was right with Cates in the second set and had the Mustangs' top player sweating.

"I think it is a huge confidence builder for Tucker knowing he can compete against one of the best players in our district," Sandy coach Chris Meyers said.

Sandy's John Behan prevailed in the other singles match that was contested as he won 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.

Sandy closes out the regular season on Thursday as it hosts Sherwood. The district meet follows a week later at the Portland Tennis Center.
