PORTLAND — The Sandy girls' tennis squad had been a powerhouse all season long and they proved it once again at the NWOC district championships last Wednesday.
The Pioneers scored a total of 44 points and convincingly won the district championship at Parkrose High School. Wilsonville placed second with 35.5 points.
"I am very proud of this team. Everyone on our team scored points to help us win," Sandy head coach Greg Thorson said. "How we were able to fill in spots today and still be effective was great to see."
The Sandy doubles teams had not lost a doubles match all season and sent an unprecedented four doubles teams into the semifinals, meaning all four of those teams qualified for the state meet.
"It basically became inter-squad competition once we got to the semifinals," Thorson said. "It was very fulfilling to see all those teams do so well."
The duo of Makenna Wells and Alyson McGaughey won the title match 6-1, 6-1.
The 5A state tournament begins Thursday at the Portland Tennis Center.
