WILSONVILLE — Despite not having a couple of key people in their lineup, like senior Jacob Hernandez, it was still business as usual for this Sandy team as they defeated Wilsonville 48-36 in a dual meet on Thursday night.

"We always expect to win because of how much work we put in. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are or what arena we're in, we are going to go toe-to-toe with anyone and we have that confidence that we are going to end up on top," Sandy's Brody Diaz de Leon said.

The Pioneers gave up forfeits in the 106-pound and 113-pound bouts to start things off, but Kendall Martin would end up setting the tone for Sandy with her performance in the 120-pound match. Martin got he first of five Sandy pins on the night, putting Jaden Cao on his his backside in the opening minute of the first round.

"Kendall really set the tone for us. We knew it would be a close dual because we had some guys in the lineup that we normally wouldn't have, so starting out with that fall was very critical," Sandy head coach Larry Topliff said.

Wilsonville would get their first fall of the night courtesy of Isaac Quesada in the following match, but fell behind on the scoreboard after giving up a pair of forfeits.

"We talked to our kids a lot about stepping on the mat and expecting to have success," Wilsonville head coach Jason Milham said. "I feel like we did that tonight. If you swing one of those matches the other way, it winds up being a tight dual…The forfeits really impacted us. Sandy is a really good team, so it was hard to come back from that."
