Sandy falls to La Salle in overtime

MILWAUKIE — From an entertainment standpoint, the NWOC opener between Sandy and La Salle couldn't have been much better.
"I told the guys before the game that it was going to be a battle. We went back and forth with (Sandy) for the whole second half," La Salle head coach Sean Christensen said. "It was one of those situations where whoever had the ball last was going to win."
Fortunately for the Falcons, it would be La Salle that would get the final shot, and Jace Norton delivered in the clutch.
The senior poured in 29 points and hit six 3-pointers, including the game-winner with 2.4 seconds left in overtime to give La Salle the 67-65 victory over Sandy.
Colton Gorski led the Pioneers with 18 points and Pierce Roeder added 17.
While Sandy head coach Jason Maki was ultimately frustrated with the heartbreaking result, he was pleased with his team's effort following a trio of losses over Christmas break at the Les Schwab Holiday Hoopfest.
"I told the guys that I was proud of their intestinal fortitude," Maki said. "Whether it was a ball bounce or a call here or there, stuff just didn't go our way. But we still kept fighting and still gave ourselves chances to win…There were a couple times where it looked like we were buried and we fought back."
The pace to this one started our quite lethargic as both teams struggled to get good looks on the offensive end. After a pair of jumpers from Gorski and Kaleb Hubbard, the Pioneers went on a six-minute scoring drought. La Salle took full advantage by going on a 10-0 run and eventually took a 12-7 lead at the end of the period.
