Portland's Kurtis Mucha turns away a Spokane shot during Sunday night's game at Memorial Coliseum. The Chiefs won 3-0, after losing 2-0 at home to the Winterhawks the night before.

The Portland Winterhawks came out flat and couldn't get going Sunday.

The Hawks were blanked for the first time this season, as they fell 3-0 to the Spokane Chiefs at Memorial Coliseum.

Portland had won the night before 2-0 at Spokane.

The Hawks, whose five-game winning streak ended, are 13-6-0-0 (26 points) and tied for first place in the Western Hockey League U.S. Division, but they failed to keep pace with Tri-City, which has played three fewer games but also has 26 points (13-3-0-0).

Spokane is fourth in the division with 15 points (7-6-1-0), behind Everett (9-4-0-0, 18 points).

The Winterhawks got into trouble early due to some penalties in the first period that gave the Chiefs the lead and the momentum.

Spokane scored at 4:48 on a power--play shot by Stefan Ulmer.

Portland had four penalties in a 3:22 span early in the game but was able to kill the others.

The Chiefs got their second goal at 7:27 of the second period on a shot by Kyle Beach.

Spokane completed its scoring at 1:07 of the third period, with Tyler Johnson getting the goal.

Portland goalie Kurtis Mucha went for the second night in a row, with Ian Curtis nursing a shoulder injury. Mucha made 32 saves.

James Reid earned the win for Spokane with 34 saves.

Portland plays its first Rose Garden game of the season on Wednesday, facing the Vancouver Giants at 7 p.m.
