Cust strokes two homers; Bevos' game Tuesday postponed

Rain and a day off could conspire to cool off the bat of Jack Cust, whose two homers Monday continued his torrid streak.

The Pacific Coast League baseball game between the Portland Beavers and Colorado Sky Sox scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed because of rain. A makeup date will be announced later.

Portland (8-11) already had a scheduled day off Wednesday before the Bevos play their series opener at Tucson at 6:30 Thursday night.

Cust has an 11-game hitting streak after he hit two solo homers in Monday’s 13-7 win at Colorado Springs. He also had a double. Cust is batting .487 (19-for-39) with eight homers and 19 RBIs during the streak,

Craig Stansberry had a season-high four hits and five RBIs. Vince Sinisi and Brett Dowdy had three hits and Paul McAnulty two hits and three RBIs. The Bevos had 18 hits, one shy of their season high.

Jack Cassel, the team’s opening day starter, picked up the win relief. An hour-long rain delay limited starter Cesar Carrillo to one inning. Reliever Steve Watkins gave up six runs.

As expected Monday, the parent San Diego Padres recalled infielder Oscar Robles and optioned pitcher Aaron Rakers. The talk was the Padres may have recalled McAnulty, but he needed to spend a certain amount of time at Triple-A after being optioned last week.

COLORADO SPRINGS 6, BEVOS 3

The Portland Beavers fell to 2-8 on the road with Sunday’s 6-3 loss at Colorado Springs.

Sean Barker hit a three-run homer off Bevo starter Jared Wells and Jayson Nix had three hits and scored three times for the Sky Sox. Four pitchers combined to hold the Bevos to two hits while striking out 12 and walking seven. Byung-Hyun Kim struck out six in 3 2/3 innings of his major-league rehab start.
