ADVERTISEMENTS
The Portland Winter Hawks overcame an early one goal deficit and ended a seven-game losing streak, beating Kootenay 4-1 Tuesday in Western Hockey League play at Memorial Coliseum.
Stefan Schneider and Tayler Jordan scored goals in the second period and then Jonathan Milhouse and Chris Francis added empty-net goals in the final period to provide the final margin.
Milhouse’s goal was the first of his WHL career.
Kootenay would take the lead after one period when Drew Czerwonka pounded home a centering pass from Dominik Pacovsky halfway through the first period.
Schneider, playing forward, would tie the score tipping a shot through Nathan Lieuwen three minutes in the second period. Jordan would get the game-winning goal at the halfway mark of the second period when he took a feed from Travis Bobbee and went on a two-on-one. Jordan used Taylor Peters as a decoy before firing a wrist shot just inside the post for the goal.
The game would remain at 2-1 until Milhouse and Francis scored empty-net goals in the final 1:04.
Kurtis Mucha would stop 36 of 37 shots to get the victory for Portland while Lieuwen stopped 29 of 31 in the loss for Kootenay.
The Hawks lay host to Calgary at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Rose Garden.
