COMFORCARE HOME CARE - Marissa PhillipsMay is National Stroke Awareness Month, a time to learn more about stroke symptoms, treatments and care. Nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. experience a stroke each year, and someone dies from stroke every four minutes. Strokes occur in young people as well as older individuals, so don't assume the signs of stroke don't apply if the victim is young.

Knowing the signs and symptoms of a stroke is the first step to ensuring medical help is received immediately. For each minute a stroke goes untreated and blood flow to the brain continues to be blocked, a person loses about 1.9 million neurons. This could mean that a person's speech, movement, memory and more could be affected.

Stroke symptoms include sudden onset of:

1. Numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body

2. Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding

3. Trouble seeing in one or both eyes

4. Dizziness, difficulty walking, loss of balance or coordination

5. Severe headache with no known cause.

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you observe any of these symptoms!

ComForCare Home Care is always ready to help stroke patients and their families when they return home.

We offer up to 24-hour-a-day specialized training to caregivers and families with regard to home modifications, physical and emotional needs. We work closely with Home Health to see that physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy take place on a regular basis to aid rehabilitation.
