Durham boy charged in face stabbing

Teen faces assault charge after police say he attacked man with screwdriver

Tigard Police has arrested a 17-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed a gas station employee in the face with a screwdriver.

Police were called to Astro gas station, 12885 S.W. Pacific Highway, near Walnut Street at about 3:30 p.m. Monday, after a gas station employee called 911 saying his co-worker had been stabbed.

The victim, a 23-year-old man from Tigard, told police he was stabbed in the cheek while walking near Southwest Main Street and Commercial Street in Tigard about 20 minutes earlier.

After the attack, a passing motorist stopped to help the victim and dropped him off at the gas station.

The weapon, a screwdriver, was found near the attack site, according to Jim Wolf, Tigard Police spokesman.

The man was taken to Oregon Health & Science University hospital for treatment.

The victim’s name has not been released, but Wolf said the man remains at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation by Tigard Police led detectives to the small city of Durham, southwest of Tigard near Bridgeport Village, where they arrested the 17-year-old boy.

A motive for the attack has not yet been released. However, Wolf said the boy and the victim had “ties to a previous altercation,” that may have prompted the attack.

“The suspect targeted and attacked the victim,” Wolf said. “This was not a random stranger-on-stranger attack. There was a specific focus in this situation.”

The boy faces first-degree assault charges.
