Adamson selected to replace Noreen on Sherwood School Board

by: BARBARA SHERMAN - Heather Cordie, Sherwood School District superintendent, (left) congratulates Jessica Adamson on her appointment to the Sherwood School Board Nov. 14.The Sherwood School Board on Nov. 14 unanimously chose Jessica Adamson to replace Kevin Noreen, who previously resigned effective the same night.

Adamson currently serves on the district’s Budget Committee, and with three children in school, she also has been active in other capacities, including the Sherwood Band Booster Club, Sherwood Care of Kids Committee and school PACs.

“These experiences have given me a depth of knowledge about the district that would be critical to success as a member of the board,” Adamson wrote in her letter of interest, adding that she has additional experience at the state level that includes serving as chief of staff to one of the Oregon House co-speakers.

“These experiences have given me insight into how to develop policy and budgets in a collaborative fashion ensuring that all stakeholders’ views are heard and addressed,” wrote Adamson, who works in public affairs at CFM Strategic Communications and ran for Oregon House District 26 in 2008.

“I strongly believe that good process leads to stronger outcomes – even when those outcomes may not be fully embraced by the whole community.”

Furthermore, “while working in and around policymakers, I have also had the opportunity professionally to learn a great deal about the state school formula, state-level education policy and on a statewide basis, the broad-based day-to-day operational concerns of local districts.

“This background, in combination with my service on the Budget Committee, provides me a foundation of knowledge on which to build to become an effective board member.”

Adamson has lived in Sherwood for eight years and currently has children at Sherwood High School and Archer Glen Elementary.

After Noreen announced his resignation due to taking a job out of town, the School Board asked for applicants to apply to be appointed to Position 1.

The only other applicant besides Adamson was Andy Jensen, who also has three children attending Sherwood schools and currently serves on the Sherwood Charter School board.

Board members interviewed Adamson and Jensen before the meeting, and the vote was the last action item on the agenda. Board members wrote the name of the applicant they supported on ballots and passed them to Chief Financial OfficerWayne Lowry, who tallied the votes.

After Adamson was declared the winner, Noreen made a motion to appoint her to the board for a term that runs through June 30, 2015, when Noreen’s term would have ended. Board Chairman Andy Pihl swore her into office.

After several people congratulated Adamson, she said, “I’m very excited, but I have amazingly large shoes to fill.”
