Meridian Park welcomes new year's first baby

Lincoln Nelson first baby born at Meridian Park in 2013

by: RAY PITZ - Phil and Kasha Nelson, of Sherwood, get to know their new baby, Lincoln Wayne Nelson, who was born at 7:16 a.m. on New Years Day. Lincoln was the first baby born at Legacy Meridian park Medical Center in 2013.The first arrival of 2013 at Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center in Tualatin came in the form of little Lincoln Wayne Nelson of Sherwood. The first baby born at the hospital in the new year arrived on Tuesday at 7:16 a.m.

He weighed in at 8 pounds and 20.25 inches long, Lincoln’s parents, Phil and Kasha Nelson, were more than ready for the arrival of their new son.

“We were actually scheduled for an induction at 7 a.m.,” said Kasha, 22. “(Lincoln) had his own plans.”

The first baby for the Nelsons, the couple said they were exhausted but excited.

“He has really long arms, big feet and very long fingers,” observed Kasha, a 2008 graduate of Sherwood High School.

That’s something that doesn’t surprise her, considering her husband, a McNary High School graduate, played basketball at both the University of Washington and Portland State University.

“I’m very excited about having a boy,” said Phil, 24. He said that way Lincoln could be a big brother for the next child the couple plans on having.

Not only is there athletic ability that runs throughout the new family, but Kasha also has musical talent on her side, including a brother who plays drums for Chicago-based indie rock band the Smith Westerns.

“(Lincoln’s) uncle is already planning on getting him a little, miniature (drum) set,” Kasha said.

And just for the record, the newborn’s name has nothing to do with the newest Steven Spielberg historical drama.

“We watched a show called ‘Prison Break,’ and there was a character called Lincoln,” Kasha pointed out.

While they weren’t initially thrilled about the name, it eventually grew on them.

Meanwhile, Meridian Park presented the new parents with a huge gift basket.

“Babies are certainly special to their families, but they are also special to Legacy Meridian Park Birth Center staff,” said Lori Drew, Meridian Park’s Family Birth Center charge nurse. “We all get excited about meeting the first babies of the new year.”

Lincoln, who slept quietly throughout the interview, will soon arrive at his monkey-themed nursery, which includes a monkey mural and a big monkey blanket.
