'Click It or Ticket' program begins

Through Feb. 24, Tualatin police participate in safety enforcement blitz

Feb. 11 marks the start of the “Click it or Ticket” program. Police agencies on the state, county and city level will be amping up safety enforcement to emphasize proper seatbelt use for adults, as well as the safety needs of children aged 4 to 8.

The campaign runs through Feb. 24 and also focuses on speed limit enforcement and the dangers of texting while driving.

This “safety enforcement blitz” is necessitated by harsh statistics. According to the Tualatin Police, in 2011, 44 percent of passenger fatalities involved victims who were not wearing a safety belt. Of children aged 8 or younger who were injured or killed in road accidents that year, 205 were using seatbelts intended for adults. Failure to use any kind of safety restraint was a factor in 14 injuries or fatalities for children 8 or younger.

The U.S. Department of Transportation reports that “consistent safety belt use” is the most effective preventative safety measure on the road. It is also state law: Drivers and passengers in Oregon are required to use a lap belt that crosses the hips and a shoulder belt that crosses the collarbone and center of the chest. Both should fit snugly and lie flat, with no knots or twists.

Separate regulations exist for children based on age (generally, 8 and younger) or weight. Find more information on safety belt and child seat laws here.

Enhanced “Clickit or Ticket” efforts are funded by federal overtime grants overseen by the Oregon Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association, the Oregon Association of Police and Oregon State Police Patrol Services.

This month’s “blitz” is one of three scheduled this year. “Click it or Ticket” will resume in May and September.
