Man steals womans purse, car, police say

Christopher RydmanA 25-year-old Tigard man was arrested last week after police say he stole an elderly woman’s purse, then drove off in her car while she was shopping at a local pharmacy.

Christopher Rydman was at Tigard Rite-Aid, 16200 S.W. Pacific Highway, when he allegedly stolen the purse of an 89-year-old woman.

The woman was shopping at the pharmacy at about 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, said Jim Wolf, a spokesman with the Tigard Police Department, and didn’t notice the purse was missing for a few moments,.

When she did notice, Wolf said, she alerted store employees and shoppers just in time to see her SUV drive away.

One witness tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle as it left the parking lot.

Police responded within a few minutes and got a description of the car and the suspect, Wolf said.

A good Samaritan called Tigard Police later that day after finding the woman’s purse, Wolf said.

It was while enroute to pick up the purse, Wolf said, that an officer spotted the stolen SUV in the parking lot of Walgreens, 13939 S.W. Pacific Highway.

Wolf said the officer also spotted Rydman walking nearby. He was arrested without incident.

Rydman was charged with second-degree theft and lodged in the Washington County Jail.

“The incident serves to remind citizens the risks imposed when items of value are left unattended, even for just a moment,” Wolf said. “Always exercise caution and complete control of personal property whenever in a public place. Don’t give a criminal an opportunity.”
