Sherwood school races offer few surprises

AllenThe upcoming School Board races for Sherwood School District will have few surprises for voters in May.

Three seats on the board are up for grabs, but each of the candidates is running unopposed, and only one is new to the job.

Connie Hansen, who has served on the Sherwood School Board since 2005 is seeking a third term, and candidate Eric Campbell is running for his first full-term after being appointed to the School Board in 2012 to replace Mark Christie who left office last year to run for the Devils Lake Water Improvement District.

The only real newcomer to the race is 50-year-old Sherwood resident Patrick Allen, who is running in his first school board race.

Allen is hoping to take the seat of current Sherwood Board chairman Andy Pihl, who is not seeking another term.

Allen said community members approached him after Pihl decided not to run.

“I have been involved in school issues for awhile,” said Allen, a father of three who has been an active member of Sherwood School District’s music programs. “This seemed like a logical way to step up and shape what the district’s present and future looks like,” he said.

Allen, the director of the state’s Department of Consumer and Business Services in Salem, said that budget issues will be a major focus over the next few years, but Allen said he wants the district to continue to offer a well-rounded education.

“I am particularly interested in the notion of providing a ‘complete education,’ ” Allen said. “The education is not allowed to devolve into just the things that show up in statewide test scores.”

That ‘complete education’ allows a student the ability to take extracurricular activities, such as art classes or other electives.

“It sounds corny, but a huge piece of high school is figuring out what you are going to be when you grow up. It’s more than just reading, writing and arithmetic.”

Allen called that one of his top priorities on the board.

“We need to continue to provide the kind of education that the parents in Sherwood expect,” he said.
