Child left alone in car leads to citation

Police say baby was alone in the hot car for 10 minutes or less

Tigard police cited a man after a 10-month-old baby was left alone in a hot car while he shopped at The Home Depot.

Peter Bodmer, 34, was cited Monday and charged with second-degree child neglect — a misdemeanor — after police were called to The Home Depot located at 14800 S.W. Sequoia Parkway.

Police arrived at about 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 9, after the 10-month-old child was discovered inside a locked vehicle in the store’s parking lot.

According to Jim Wolf, a spokesman for the police department, a witness called police after noticing the baby alone in the car.

Temperatures on Friday peaked at about 80 degrees in Tigard.

The baby appeared to be in distress, Wolf said, with fluid coming out of the infant’s nose.

As witnesses called police, an employee was able to force down a cracked window and unlock the door, removing the child from the car before police arrived.

The employee took the child inside the store to cool down.

Wolf said police were still reviewing video to determine how long the child was inside the vehicle. Information obtained by the officer at the scene estimated the baby was in the car for 10 minutes or less, Wolf said.

The father was not cited by police at the time, after Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue paramedics examined the child and determined the child was unharmed.

The fluid coming from the child was more akin to drooling than a medical emergency, Wolf said.

After allowing the father to leave, police reviewed witness statements and determined the man had violated the law, citing him with the misdemeanor offense.

Police have also alerted the Oregon Department of Human Services, Wolf said.

Temperatures inside vehicles can reach dangerous levels even on cloudy days, Wolf advised.

“Never leave children or pets inside a vehicle,” Wolf said. “Even for a short time.”

Bodmer is scheduled to appear in Washington County Circuit Court next month.
