Tualatin man pleads guilty to killing dog with hatchet

Leroy MoffittA Tualatin man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to killing his dog with a hatchet in a Tualatin apartment complex.

Leroy Jacob Moffitt, 44, is in jail after the March incident.

“The words, ‘I admit I killed my dog’ never left his mouth,” said Deputy District Attorney Jason Weiner.

“He plead guilty to aggravated animal abuse in the first degree.”

Police and animal control were called to Moffitt’s apartment complex early on March 14 after a maintenance worker discovered the bloody body of a 13-year-old black Labrador retriever. The dog’s microchip identified her as Baby, and identified Moffitt as her owner.

Moffitt initially told police he had Baby euthanized by a veterinarian, then buried her in a nearby field. After further questioning, Moffitt admitted to police he had used a hatchet to kill the dog and afterward, dumped her in a nearby field.

“He said he wanted to put her out of ‘his and her misery,’ ” Weiner said, adding that records showed Moffitt had an “ongoing relationship” with a veterinarian in the area, suggesting he could have easily arranged to have Baby euthanized.

Moffitt stated that the dog couldn’t walk, and that Moffitt had plans to move in with his girlfriend and would not have been able to take Baby with him.

Under the plea agreement, Moffitt will serve 60 days in jail and will be on probation for three years. He will be prohibited from owning a domesticated animal for 15 years, Weiner said, and his residence is subject to search if anyone has reasonable suspicion he is in possession of a domestic animal in that 15-year period.
