State of the City: Cook gets technical with Tigard address

(Image is Clickable Link) Tigard Mayor John Cook has posted his first State of the City video online. Cook said he chose to present a video rather than a traditional State of the City speech in order to get the message to more constituents.Tigard Mayor John L. Cook didn’t want to do the same ol’ same ol.’

While mayors across Washington County have been giving their annual “State of the City” speeches the past few weeks, outlining last year’s successes and where the city will be heading in the future, Cook decided to put on a show.

Cook, who took office last year to fill the seat of former Mayor Craig Dirksen who left office to run for Metro, debuted a video address on Tuesday, featuring interviews with community members about the state of the city.

“I wanted to put out this video because not all 49,000 people in Tigard could fit into this room,” Cook told a crowd of elected officials and city volunteers at City Hall on Tuesday.

The video, which is available on the city’s website, documents some of the projects and advancements the city made in 2013, as well as some of the projects Tigard is still involved in.

The interviews included Tigard Transportation Advisory Committee member Elise Shearer, who outlined the need for the city to contribute to the Southwest Corridor Plan, which plans to bring either a MAX light-rail or bus rapid-transit line to Tigard in the future.

“Participating in the Southwest Corridor (plan) is really important, but it’s one of the least served corridors,” she said in her interview.

Cook also addressed plans for developing River Terrace, work being done in downtown Tigard and ways the city is engaging with the community — from monthly “fireside chats” with residents to discuss local issues to traditional town halls.

“Tigard has made great strides this year, and our long-term investments are beginning to pay off,” Cook said in the video. “The state of the city of Tigard is nothing short of amazing, and I invite you to watch Tigard continue to grow and thrive in 2014.”
