Matthew Scott, 39, was killed while driving in snowy conditions at about 10 a.m., when his car was involved in a massive a 27-car pileup near Battle Ground, Wash.

According to Washington State Police Trooper Steve Schatzel, one other person was critically injured and two more suffered serious injuries.

The crash occurred near the Gee Creek rest area and was one of several pileups along the corridor during Thursday’s snowstorm.

According to The Columbian newspaper, firefighters from nearly every fire department in Clark County assisted at the scene.

Scott’s car was badly damaged in the crash, and Jaws of Life were used to extract him from the vehicle, the paper reported, but Scott died of his wounds at the scene.

I-5 was closed between Ridgefield and Battle Ground in both directions through 12:30 p.m. By 1:45 p.m., the northbound freeway was completely opened, while only one southbound lane open. According to WSDOT, southbound traffic was backed up 10 miles, all the way to Woodland.
