Trade in food for fines at Tigard Public Library

Looking to shave a few bucks off your library fines?

The Tigard Public Library is holding its sixth annual Food for Fines drive this Sunday through Saturday, March 29.

For every two non-perishable food items donated to the library, $1 will be waived from patrons’ accounts, up to $10.

The Food for Fines program applies only to fines, not damaged or lost items.

Library officials recommend bringing in baby food, chili, soup, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pasta, rice, cereal, canned fruits, fruit juices and canned meats such as tuna or chicken.

The library collects on average more than 2,500 pounds of food during the weeklong food drive and waives about $1,000 in fines.

The library can’t accept homemade or open items, or unlabeled cans.

The items will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry in Tigard and distributed to families in need.

March is an important month for food pantries, said library spokeswoman Alison Grimes, because food bank inventories are often depleted.

The library is also accepting cash donations to the food pantry.

Donations can be made at the library circulation desk during regular hours.

The Tigard Public Library is located at 13500 S.W. Hall Blvd. To learn more about the program, patrons
