Tualatin Police say a welfare check at a home near Byrom Elementary School led police to an illegal drug manufacturing operation, and an apparent suicide.

At about 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, officers were asked to perform a welfare check in the 9500 block of Arikara Drive, near Boones Ferry Road, according to Jennifer Massey, a spokeswoman with the Tualatin Police Department.

As officers were responding to the call, witnesses reported hearing a gunshot from the location, Massey said. When officers arrived, they found a man dead on the front porch of the home.

Officers said the man, whose name was not released, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Massey said police found evidence of illegal drug manufacturing inside the home.

The Washington County Clandestine Lab Team and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue's HazMat Unit were called in to process the scene and ensure the area was safe.

Police closed Southwest Boones Ferry Road and Columbia for about four hours during the preliminary investigation.

The investigation is ongoing, Massey said.
