Mother receives life in prison after beating son to death

Jessica DutroA mother convicted of beating her 4-year-old son to death in 2012 was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.

Jessica Dutro, 25, was found guilty on seven counts, including murder, murder by abuse and second-degree assault, in the death of her 4-year-old son Zachary Dutro-Boggess.

Dutro will be eligible for parole after 25 years.

Brian Canady, Dutro’s boyfriend, was sentenced to 12-and-a-half years, with credit for time served.

Canady agreed to lesser charges as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.

Dutro and Canady were arrested in August 2012 after the boy's death. Prosecutors said the couple beat Dutro's children from a previous relationship and that Dutro had beaten the boy so badly that it caused internal injuries, which led to his death.

The couple watched the boy's health deteriorate over a few days, and didn't take the boy to a hospital until he became unresponsive.

During Dutro’s trial, the prosecution brought forth a Facebook message from Dutro saying her son was being punished because she thought he would be gay. The message was sent three months before Zachary’s death.
