Motorists passing the scene also called 9-1-1 shortly after 8 p.m. after seeing black smoke billowing out of the structure at 13910 Tualatin-Sherwood Road.

Firefighters from Sherwood Station No. 33 were the first to arrive on the scene, finding heavy smoke and two workers exiting from the 25,000-squre-foot structure that serves as a material recovery facility and contained construction debris for recycling, according to a TVF&R spokesperson.

The two workers who were initially met by the first-arriving crew were evaluated by medical personnel on-scene for smoke exposure then released. With the assistance of Pride Recycling personnel, crews soaked the remaining debris with water to ensure the fire was extinguished and that it did not extend to any other areas of the building

The first-alarm fire brought more than 30 TVF&R firefighters to the scene including volunteers.  An investigator for the fire district is working to determine the cause of the fire.
