Times brings home awards from state newspaper association

The Times' Sports Editor Dan Brood brought home an award from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association for this photo of Sherwood junior Hunter Pfefferkorn after the Bowmen won the 4 x 400 relay at the Class 5A State Track and Field Championships.       The Times has earned several awards in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest, including an award for general excellence.

The ONPA's annual awards are the highest presented to Oregon newspapers for the best examples of the industry.

The Times’ news team received a third-place award for general excellence, as well as six awards for its photography, profiles and its reporting into the death of Renee Radziwon-Chapman, the Portland woman killed after being mauled by a cougar at a big-cat sanctuary in rural Sherwood.

1st place –

Best Enterprise Reporting: “Renee Radziwon-Chapman investigation” by Geoff Pursinger

2nd Place –

Best Lifestyle Coverage: “Men on the Street” by Saundra Sorenson, which looked at the troubles faced by homeless men in Washington County.

Best Sports Photo: “Running to Glory” by Dan Brood captured Sherwood junior Hunter Pfefferkorn's emotional win after the Bowmen won the 4 x 400 relay at the Class 5A State Track and Field Championships.


3rd Place -

General Excellence

Best Sports Story: “Title Terrific" by Dan Brood chronicled the Tualatin Timberwolves 2-0 win over Sunset High School to claim the Class 6A state championship in November.

Best Feature Story (Personality): “Raising Eyebrows” by Geoff Pursinger profiled Eric Cavizo, a barber from Portland who moved his eccentric barbershop to Tigard in March.

The Beaverton Valley Times, which shares many of The Times' staff members, received 10 prizes from the ONPA, including a third place award for “Fact Book,” an annual magazine printed in both newspapers.
