Locals give National Day of Dance a whirl

On Saturday at the Leedy Grange in Cedar Mill, Michael and Cynthia Parent, owners of Impressions Dance Club, offered free dance lessons to help celebrate National Day of Dance.

The husband-and-wife duo taught a marathon workshop of American-style ballroom favorites like swing, rumba, foxtrot, waltz, tango and salsa.

Drew Doser was in attendance with his friend Meredith Dyall.

“I came here because I was told they needed more men,” Doser said. Dyall said she came to learn the waltz and tango.

According to Michael Parent, the event drew different people throughout the day. “About 40 people attended dance aerobics class, which was from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The rest of the day consisted of a diverse group, which ranged from high school and college students as well as senior citizens,” he said.

“We’ve been teaching school programs for several years in Tigard and other more rural areas and hope to bring our social dance program to schools in the Beaverton area as a way to teach social connection and anti-bullying through direct fun interaction among young students,” Cynthia Parent said.

Michael Parent said he considered the event a huge success. “Cynthia and I wanted give families an inexpensive, affordable outing to do something together.”

Michael and Cynthia offer dance lessons on the second and fourth Friday of each month at Leedy Grange from 7 to 8 p.m. General dancing is from 8 to 10 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for teens and youth.
